Within a 50 km radius
of the Pukekohe base is a wide range of protected
and outdoor vegetable crops. Onions, potatoes,
tomatoes, cucurbits, brassicas, lettuce and carrots
are available for test crops and for reference
to current industry best growing practices. Brush
weeds, forestry, maize, ornamentals, pasture,
strawberries, turf and non-crop areas are also
locally available for evaluation.
Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty is recognised for kiwifruit, avocados and a range of subtropical fruit crops. The base in Hastings covers off work in Pipfruit, grapes, stone fruit and a variety of process vegetable crops.
Most trial sites are established
on co-operating growers’ properties. Areas
are selected to source specific targeted pests
and diseases in those sites, or areas where crop
types are traditionally grown and have reliable
grower support for crop security and management.
Purpose planted crops can be tested at both Pukekohe
and Hastings where cropping land is managed,
along with a designated Research Orchard.
Costs for projects are calculated
on a case-by-case basis and are dependent on numbers
of applications, assessments, reporting requirement
and travel distance. Quotations are provided free
